New Breeds and Blends (and how to tell the difference)

If you’ve looked at our menus recently, you may have noticed some new products, including a few new breeds and blends. Our production team is always working to expand and improve our product offerings, and their recent efforts have produced some outstanding results. Specifically, our cultivators have bred some exciting new crosses, and our lab has produced some awesome new blended live rosin concentrates. In the past, we have also featured blended pre-rolls, and these have been popular with patients.

Before we get into the details, let’s begin with two simple clarifications:

  • Anytime you see “x” in a product name or description, this indicates that the plant is a genetic cross between two parents (e.g. Lilac Sour Diesel x Crescendo). Sometimes breeders of new genetics give each cross a new name, and sometimes they don’t (perhaps until later), which can result in some confusion.
  • Anytime you see “+” in a product name or description, this means it is a blended product. For example, we currently have “Love Chimera + Candy Fumez Live Rosin Budder” on our menus. This means our lab has produced solventless “budder” from these two plants separately and then blended them together prior to packaging.

When done well, breeding and blending can both result in superior cannabis products. Patients, we encourage you to try different breeds and blends until you find out what works best for you!

New Breeds

Our cultivation team is always on the lookout for new genetics that will produce the best possible cannabis products. Patients have a wide range of needs and preferences, so we welcome this ongoing challenge.

In our quest for plants with unique and desirable characteristics, we frequently try out new seeds offered by top breeders. This is called a “pheno hunt,” in which we grow a small number of plants of many different varieties in search of an ideal “phenotype.” Most of these plants will never appear on our menus, since only plants that exhibit exceptional characteristics will be put into production.

Last year, we decided to supplement our regular pheno hunts by breeding some new genetics in-house, and we’ve been very pleased with the results. If you have tried our our “Panama Mints” (Panama Red x Kush Mints) or our “Mint Life Crisis” (Zuddz x Kush Mints), then you have already experienced the results of our in-house breeding project! In both cases, we believe the new cultivar is arguably more desirable than either of its parents, so we decided to give them new names.

We chose to use a male Kush Mints plant for our breeding project because Kush Mints plants grow very well for us, exhibiting excellent plant and bud structure and producing desirable levels of cannabinoids and terpenes. Also, our best-selling LA Kush Cake is itself a Kush Mints cross (Wedding Cake x Kush Mints), so we figured other Kush Mints crosses would be worth a try.

The result (depicted above) is a beautiful plant that we decided to name “Panama Mints.” We thought our classic Panama Red would be a great choice for this because many patients have found it beneficial, but it is notoriously difficult to grow and process. Also, the bud structure of our Panama Red flower was far from ideal, so we hoped the Kush Mints genetics would give it the look and feel of a modern hybrid. Our initial release of this flower sold out quickly, so we are already growing more!

Here’s a photo of the finished Panama Mints flower, which looks great and appears to have maintained the unique characteristics that made its heirloom parent a favorite for many decades:

We are also very happy with our Mint Life Crisis flower, which is chock-full of a terpene called beta-myrcene. If you liked our Zuddz flower, we think you might like this even better! Here’s a photo:

Finally, we also tried crossing LA Kush Cake and Clientele Kush with Kush Mints. The results were good, but not (in our opinion) substantially better than the original cultivars. As a result, we did not give these crosses new names, and we are unlikely to grow them again. For a limited time, you can find them on our menus as LA Kush Cake x Kush Mints and Clientele Kush x Kush Mints.

New Blends

In addition to breeding, we’ve found that blending is another great way to diversify our product offerings. Blending allows us to create combinations of cannabinoids and terpenes that otherwise are unavailable or may not exist in a single plant. Patients have responded favorably in the past when we have offered blended pre-rolls, so we have been applying this logic to our live rosin concentrates as well.

If you’ve ever enjoyed a glass of cranberry-apple juice or a mug of Mocha Java coffee, then you understand the potential benefits of blended products! Sometimes a combination of two products can be more desirable than either product individually.

Our Love Chimera + Candy Fumez live rosin products are only the beginning. We will continue to experiment with blended products, and we would love to hear feedback from patients. Please feel free to email us anytime if you’d like to share your thoughts on our new breeds, our new blends, or any of our products!
