TERPINOLENE: WHAT IT IS, WHERE IT'S FOUND, AND THE BENEFITS
What is Terpinolene?
Terpinolene is a less common terpene found in cannabis that smells very similar to a parsnip. Several different plants contain terpinolene but it is found in significantly higher amounts in parsnips than any others. Terpinolene has a sharp aroma with citrus, floral, and pine notes. Jack Herer is one of the most famous terpinolene dominant strains and it is present in some of our strains. Cannabis cultivars (aka strains) with terpinolene are typically sativa or hybrid strains with uplifting effects. A study with mice found that terpinolene on its own can have sedative effects, but it is believed to be uplifting for the mood in combination with THC. Like many other terpenes, terpinolene has potential therapeutic benefits that could help with various conditions.
Where is Terpinolene Found?
Parsnips have high concentrations of terpinolene which contributes to the sharp aroma. Terpinolene is also found in tea tree, nutmeg, celery, carrots, parsley, rosemary, and many other plants. You may find products with terpinolene in your grocery store because it used as a flavoring agent for beverages, baked goods, and candy. It is also used for its fragrance in cleaning products like bathroom cleaners, laundry detergents, and dish soap.
Potential Therapeutic Benefits
Multiple studies have found that terpinolene has anti-cancer properties. One study found that terpinolene from sage and rosemary extract prevented cancer cell growth in a variety of human cancers. Another study that was done on brain tumor cells in rats, found that terpinolene had anticancer properties.
Like many terpenes, terpinolene has been shown to help reduce inflammation. A study found that terpinolene may help with wound healing because of its anti-inflammatory properties.
In addition to the other benefits, one study found that terpinolene had anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits.
