CBD: WHAT IT IS, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS, AND WHERE IT'S FOUND.
What is CBD?
CBD (also known as cannabidiol) is a compound in cannabis that has come to be well known for its therapeutic benefits and potential. Although it is derived from the same “mother cannabinoid” (CBG) as its sibling D9 THC, CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid. It is known best for its antiepileptic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-anxiety properties. Additionally, some recent research indicates that this cannabinoid may be effective for helping reduce cravings for substances of abuse (nicotine, for example). CBD has also been shown to help moderate the intoxicating effects of THC. Research suggests that it may work synergistically with other cannabinoids, a concept known as the “entourage effect.” It’s easy to see why patients are so interested in CBD!
Where is CBD Found?
Like THC, CBD can be found in many different forms. It is available in a plethora of products, including tinctures, edibles, and flower. Some products have CBD as the primary cannabinoid, while others contain it in combination with other cannabinoids like THC. It is common to see products with equal amounts of THC and CBD for their combined therapeutic benefits.
Is CBD Federally Legal in the US?
CBD is federally legal when it is derived from hemp plants. Federal law defines hemp as Cannabis sativa that contains no more than 0.3% THC. Unfortunately, most hemp-derived products are not subjected to independent lab testing. We strongly recommend obtaining cannabis products from a regulated source.
