Delta-8 THC: WHAT IT IS, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS, AND WHERE IT'S FOUND.
What is Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 THC (also referred to as D-8 THC, or just D8) is similar to the Delta-9 THC that is prevalent in natural cannabis, but there are important differences. Unlike Delta-9 THC, D8 appears naturally only in trace quantities, so it must be synthesized from other cannabinoids rather than being cultivated. For this reason, it is especially important that patients obtain D8 products only from a well-regulated source such as a GraniteLeaf dispensary.
Many patients report that the effects of Delta-8 THC are similar to Delta-9 THC but somewhat milder. Depending on the dose, it can be a good option for getting relief from THC, but with a more clear-headed experience. D8 may be a great alternative to D9, especially for patients who find that D9 products are too intense. It can be used on its own, or in combination with other cannabinoids like CBD or THCA.
Potential Therapeutic Benefits
The therapeutic benefits of Delta-8 THC appear to be similar to those of Delta-9 THC. D8 has been reported to help with pain, appetite stimulation, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, PTSD, and sleep. This cannabinoid confers many potential benefits and appears to be worthy of consideration, especially for daytime use.
Very few studies have been conducted on this cannabinoid, and overall, patients have much less experience with Delta-8 THC than Delta-9 THC. However, many patients have reported the following positive effects.
Delta-8 THC may be helpful for reducing stress related to anxiety or PTSD. Though there aren’t currently many studies that support this, the National Cancer Institute lists “anxiolytic” (anxiety-reducing) as one of its potential effects. In a consumer survey, 69% of consumers reported using it for anxiety or panic attacks, and 52% reported using it for stress. Many of our patients have found D-8 products to be helpful for reducing anxiety, especially during the daytime when they do not want to be intoxicated.
Delta-8 THC may be beneficial for people looking to increase their appetite, especially if they have cachexia or wasting syndrome. A study on mice found that it increased food consumption and improved cognitive function. Many patients have used D-8 products for increasing appetite and have found it to be beneficial.
A study published in April 2023 found that Delta-8 THC was a neuroprotective agent that may help with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. Other cannabinoids with neuroprotective properties that could be used in combination with D-8 include Delta-9 THC, THCA, THCV, CBD, and CBG.
The analgesic properties of Delta-8 THC make it a good choice for daytime relief of chronic pain. Very few studies have been conducted to determine the pain-relieving benefits of this cannabinoid, but a survey of Delta-8 consumers found that 41% of participants say they use D-8 to treat chronic pain.
Delta-8 THC has been found to be beneficial for appetite, nausea, and vomiting, especially when it is chemotherapy induced. A study conducted in 1997 tested the effectiveness of D-8 in preventing vomiting in pediatric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In all eight patients, vomiting was completely prevented when taken before and after receiving treatment.
Products Containing Delta-8 THC
GraniteLeaf Cannabis produces capsules, tinctures, and vape cartridges for patients who are seeking the benefits of Delta-8 THC. Other dispensaries may offer additional ways to consume Delta-8 THC including fruit chews and other types of edibles. However, unlike D8 products you may find elsewhere, all GraniteLeaf D8 products are tested by an independent lab to ensure they are free from contaminants.
