Cannabis-Infused Butter Recipe
Infusing butter with cannabis is an easy and versatile way to make edibles. You can easily use cannabis-infused butter in any recipe with butter listed as an ingredient. You can also add the butter to something like toast, baked potatoes, or even popcorn.
There are several methods of infusing butter, and each will result in a slightly different quality product. One of the easiest ways is to mix one of our edible cannabis oils with melted butter. This method makes it easier to get an accurate dose and takes less time. Another method is to infuse the butter with cannabis flower. This method can help anyone looking for benefits from a specific cultivar. Infusing butter with cannabis flower takes a few steps but it can still be done easily at home. Here are some easy instructions for both methods to help you get started with infusing butter.
Making Cannabis-Infused Butter with Edible Cannabis Oil
Ingredients
- Edible Cannabis Oil
- Butter
- Warm water
Directions
- Put edible cannabis oil (with the cap still on) into a container with warm water (a mug works well for this)
- Melt the desired amount of butter in a bowl
- Add the contents of the syringe to the butter
- Mix until all the oil is evenly distributed
- Either use melted butter in a recipe immediately or put into a container to save for later
Dosage
- To get an accurate dose with your infused recipe, you will need to divide your recipe into even parts. For example, if you make a pan of brownies, it is easy to evenly divide into squares.
- Calculating the dosage may take a little bit of math. If the recipe calls for half a cup of butter, you can either infuse just the ½ cup (400mg) or a whole cup of butter and only use half (200 mg). You will take the dosage of the butter and divide it by the number of parts you divide the recipe into.
- If you use the entirety of the 400mg edible cannabis oil, you can divide by these numbers to get the following doses.
- 80 x 5mg doses
- 40 x 10mg doses
- 20 x 20mg doses
- 8 x 50mg doses
- Example: If you bake a batch of brownies with ½ cup of butter and the 400mg edible cannabis oil in an 8×8 pan and divide into 16 two-inch squares, each serving will be 25mg.
- Example: If you infuse 1 cup (16 tablespoons) of butter with the 400mg edible cannabis oil, each tablespoon will be 25mg.
- You can increase or decrease the dosage by changing the amount of butter used in the recipe.
- You can also use a combination of infused and regular butter to get the dose that works best for you.
Making Cannabis-Infused Butter with Flower
Ingredients
- Cannabis flower
- Butter
- Water
Directions
- Preheat oven to 230°F
- Grind cannabis flower and spread out onto a cookie sheet
- Bake for 30 minutes to “decarboxylate” the flower, activating the THC
- Use a double boiler, slow cooker, or pot on low heat to melt butter
- Add decarboxylated flower and water (use equal parts water to butter)
- Simmer for 2-4 hours making sure the water has all evaporated
- Strain through a cheesecloth to separate the cannabis flower from the butter
- Either use melted butter in a recipe immediately or put into a container to save for later
Dosage
- With this method, it is challenging to get an accurate dose. However, there are ways to calculate an estimated dose.
- To get the total THC in the butter, use this formula:
- (Grams of flower x 1000) x (% of THC/100) / # of servings = dose/serving
- To get the dose per serving, divide the total THC in butter by the number of servings
- Example: If you make a batch of brownies with ½ cup of butter and 4 grams of 20% THC flower divided into 16 even squares, the dosage would be about 50mg each.
- (4 grams x 1000) x (20%/100) / 16 servings = 50mg per brownie
- Because the dosage is estimated and can vary, please start low and slow with homemade edible products
- These formulas can also be used to calculate the dosage of other cannabinoids, like CBD.
